Introduction
Greyfriars Church can seem a daunting place when faced with such a large number of people. Questions like, “Who are all these people? What do they do? Will they see me? How will I ever fit in?” are not uncommon.
As a church we recognise this challenge and have established a small Group structure to help find a place where everyone can fit in and find friendship and support. That’s why Small Groups are the backbone of Greyfriars and vital to its ongoing life and growth. We actively encourage all newcomers to join a Small Group.
Why are Small Groups the answer?
Celebrating with God’s family each Sunday is great, but sharing our lives and situations is hard when there are so many unknown faces around. Small Groups, which meet regularly in homes in Reading and the surrounding area, create the ideal size and environment to get to know each other as we practically work at being church at Greyfriars.
What do Small Groups do?
Small groups are about our relationship with God and with others. In smaller groups trust and friendship are established. We are able to give and receive prayer. It’s also an opportunity to discover and use spiritual gifts, welcome newcomers, have fun together and generally look after one another. In short, an excellent way to become involved in the heart of things: focusing on God and being strengthened by the love of those around us.
Can anyone get involved?
Small Groups are for those who feel Greyfriars is the church for them at this time and also for those without a church affiliation who are exploring Christianity. If you are not sure about the Christian faith but would like to know more, we would recommend the Alpha course to you.
How do I choose the right Small Group?
You will normally be asked to join a Small Group in the area in which you live. The Area Supporter will discuss with you your requirements and give you idea of the groups that meet in that area. On agreement you will be asked to join a group for a 4-week trial period as a guest, at the end of which you will be able to join on a permanent basis.
