GiveBack Sunday, April 19th, 2009
Whether because of the new financial year or in a sense of a spring clean, now is a good time to give ourselves and our money an annual review; time to look again at our household finances and what we are giving back to God.
The challenge of GiveBack Sunday April 19th is for us all to think and pray about how we use our Time, Talents, Tithe. Even though there is financial uncertainty for many people, and real difficulty for some, we can all let God speak to us about how we respond to:
'Give according to your means; God does not ask for what we do not have.' 2 Corinthians 8:11.
Stewardship, Discipleship, Worship.
Part of our worship is in responding to God’s generosity to us. GiveBack Sunday is a time to pray and consider our regular monthly giving to God’s church, and a chance to review and renew what we Give Back to God.
- Our Giving is First to the Lord
Give God the first portion of your income so you constantly remember God's sovereignty. (Proverbs 3:9) - Our Tithe is Holy to the Lord
Tithing is the Biblical practice of honouring God with a tenth of income. Proportionate giving challenges all of us, rich and poor. (Genesis 28:10-22) - Our Giving is Sacrificial
Giving is part of our sacrifice of praise, at times God asks us to give until we really feel it. (2 Corinthians 8:2-3) - Our generous heart is Blessed by the Lord
The miracle of stewardship is that the more we give, the more we receive, not in kind, but God's gift to us is greater than our gifts to Him. (2 Corinthians 9:8)
Time, Talents, Tithe
These 3 T's are a good reminder that stewardship is not just about money but about the whole of us. One member of the congregation spoke in church about tithing their time back to Greyfriars. Our abilities and energies can be just as valuable to the church in being part of building the Kingdom.
